The Boxing Commission of Fiji has suspended the license of South Pacific Boxing Promotion (SPBP) and its promoter, Fredy Chand. This decision follows an extensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the late Ubayd Haider, a once-promising boxer who had gained local fame.
Eroni Loganimoce, a member of the BCF board, explained that the suspension was necessary due to Chand’s inability to comply with certain agreements established between the promotion and the commission. Concerns regarding the well-being of the boxers under this promotion also contributed to the decision, as there was reportedly minimal cooperation from the promoter.
Loganimoce emphasized that the safety and welfare of boxers in Fiji are of utmost importance. The commission is taking steps to prevent incidents like that of Haider’s from recurring in the future. The suspension took effect on Friday, November 29.
This development reflects a commitment to ensuring the safety of athletes in the boxing industry, highlighting that regulatory bodies are taking proactive measures to protect those in the sport. Moving forward, it’s essential for promoters to adhere to the regulations and agreements designed to safeguard the well-being of boxers. The boxing community in Fiji can remain hopeful that these actions will foster a more secure environment for all competitors.
