Fiji’s head coach for amateur boxing, Cam Todd, believes that increasing exposure through international competitions is crucial for developing stronger local talents. He is prepping nine of his best boxers for the Australian Golden Gloves tournament set for July, considering it a valuable opportunity to gain essential experience for the forthcoming Men’s and Women’s World Championships later this year.

Todd highlighted the need for more overseas competitions, stating, “They help the boxers grow, both in and out of the ring. The level of competition is high, and it forces our boxers to lift their performance.” The team, which trains daily at the Stan Brown Boxing Gym in Walu Bay, Suva, has shown promising signs as most boxers are already close to their target weights.

Another vital aspect of Todd’s strategy is addressing the depth within the sport in Fiji. He mentioned, “We’re looking to build depth. These kinds of events are important for that. It’s not just about winning, it’s about learning and gaining experience.” The focus on skill development is also reflected in the training sessions, where basic techniques are emphasized, particularly in footwork, helping boxers effectively deliver their punches.

Todd recently returned from Colorado, where he coached another team in the USA Boxing International Open, and he aims to ensure that all of the boxers are well-prepared and confident by the time they compete in Australia. Additionally, a local boxing competition is scheduled for this Saturday at the same gym, further promoting engagement and development within the community.

The increased support for grassroots talent and the intention to include junior and youth boxers in future competitions indicate a proactive approach to nurturing the next generation of Fijian boxers. With upcoming events presenting both local and competitive opportunities, the outlook for boxing in Fiji remains optimistic, highlighting the potential for growth and success on the international stage.
