Adi Narayan, chairman of the Boxing Commission of Fiji (BCF), has expressed his disappointment following the Ministry of Youth and Sports’ recent advertisement for his position, which comes well before the end of his term on July 31. Narayan noted his surprise at the premature advertisement, as he had previously been informed by the Minister that such a move would occur closer to the end of his term.

Narayan emphasized that he intends to continue in his role, which has led to confusion among stakeholders and the public regarding any potential resignation. To address these uncertainties, he announced an upcoming stakeholders’ meeting that will be open to the media for questions and clarifications.

In a separate issue, Narayan raised concerns about a former board member who was suspended last year due to allegations involving the misuse of over $1,200 in commission funds. Alarmingly, this individual has reportedly been appointed to a new position within the Ministry of Sports. Despite Narayan having reported this matter to the Minister last year, he stated that no actions have been taken thus far. He confirmed that the board possesses evidence of the alleged misconduct and is considering potential legal action.

Efforts to reach Minister of Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru for comments on these matters were unsuccessful, as calls and messages went unanswered. The BCF board intends to convene shortly to explore ways to handle these pressing issues.

This situation underscores the ongoing governance challenges faced by the Boxing Commission and raises significant questions about accountability within the Ministry of Youth and Sports. Further updates are anticipated following the stakeholders’ meeting, which aims to clarify these pressing concerns.

In a positive note for boxing fans, the first boxing promotion of the year is set to take place later this month at the Vodafone Arena in Suva, promising an exciting event amidst these challenges.
