Fiji Airports’ Board Compensation Sparks Interest Amid Tourism Growth

Fiji Airports reported in its 2022 annual report that it compensated its three directors a total of $30,564 for their services during the financial year. Additionally, the company incurred $11,632 in expenses primarily related to travel and accommodation while directors fulfilled their duties. The annual report, which was presented to Parliament, identifies Hasmukh Lal and Viliame Vodonaivalu as serving board directors in 2022, with Hasmukh Patel appointed as chairperson in June 2022.

Notably, Nemia Dawai, another director, resigned from the board in October 2022. The report clarifies that the Ministry for Economy, Civil Service, and Communications is responsible for appointing the directors. Furthermore, the articles governing Fiji Airports stipulate that a maximum of seven directors may serve unless otherwise determined by the Ministry.

In earlier discussions, Fiji Airports was acknowledged for its vital contributions to the government’s finances, averaging approximately $20 million annually in profit-sharing. The ongoing efforts to enhance aviation services, particularly through the Nadi Airport master plan, and the anticipated increase in tourism — with expectations of hosting around one million visitors — represent positive indicators for the future growth of Fiji’s aviation sector.

The focus on improvements and sustainability initiatives exemplifies Fiji Airports’ commitment not just to its governance but also to the broader economic landscape of Fiji, reinforcing the essential role of aviation in national revenue and development.
