The Fijian government has courageously taken steps to improve the country’s healthcare system by commissioning independent reviews and openly sharing the findings, says Acting Prime Minister and Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad. These efforts highlight the current administration’s commitment to transparency and progress. With substantial projects funded by the Australian government already underway, positive strides are visible in institutions like the CWM Hospital, where lifts have been repaired, albeit challenges still remain.
Recent developments see long-overdue repairs at centers such as the Nasinu Health Centre and efforts to rebuild the Kadavu Hospital, vital for ensuring mothers do not have to give birth in compromised conditions. Additionally, a strategic agreement with India aims to provide more affordable medicines and introduce a community pharmacy model, while the U.S.-backed “Healthy Pacific” project, alongside the World Bank, promises to enhance the quality of healthcare throughout the region.
Prof Prasad also announced the initiation of several key projects, including a new national “Pacific Hospital” to be constructed with help from the Indian government in Nasinu, designed to provide specialized care, such as cardiac treatment, thus reducing the need for citizens to seek such care abroad. Furthering this commitment, greater focus on healthcare is paired with crucial investment in education, underscoring their dual importance to both social welfare and economic growth.
These initiatives are not just reactive but part of a broader strategic plan to revamp Fiji’s health services for the better. Embracing a comprehensive 5-year National Health Strategic Plan from 2026 to 2030, the government aims to establish a robust framework to improve healthcare accessibility and quality nationwide. These efforts are bolstered by expert collaborations, both local and international, positioning Fiji on a hopeful path of healthcare reform. The vision is rejuvenating public services to restore public confidence and ensure the well-being of its citizens.
With these strategic measures in place, the Fijian government strives towards transformative healthcare reforms, laying a strong foundation for consistent improvement, bolstered by international collaboration and investment. The dedication to addressing past neglect and advancing infrastructure and services offers promising prospects for the nation’s healthcare landscape.
