The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has reaffirmed its independence, stating that there has been no interference from the Government or any political parties in its investigations. In a recent statement, FICAC emphasized that its ongoing cases are handled without external influence and that proper procedures are being followed.
FICAC referenced a previous press release from March, which clarified that any interference noted did not come from the current Coalition Government but rather from the former Attorney-General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum. The Commission also mentioned Sayed-Khaiyum’s complaint to Fiji’s President, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, concerning the former Deputy Commissioner, Francis Puleiwai, in April 2024, the status of which remains unclear.
The Commission acknowledged significant changes over the past year, including shifts in leadership and staff, which have impacted the progress of certain investigations. Nevertheless, FICAC asserted its commitment to conclude pending cases while upholding its independence as mandated by law.
