The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has officially concluded its investigation into allegations against former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama, affirming that he will not face any criminal charges related to his conduct as the Leader of the FijiFirst Party. This decision follows complaints that Bainimarama continued to operate in his role despite a conviction on May 9, 2024, for attempting to pervert the course of justice.
FICAC’s findings revealed that Bainimarama did indeed sign a letter as FijiFirst Leader on May 30, 2024, even after receiving a “Notice of Removal from the National Register of Voters.” Although he failed to respond within the stipulated fourteen-day period and was subsequently removed from the register on June 14, 2024, FICAC determined that he was still legally a registered voter at the time of signing the letter. This designation allowed him to fulfill his role under the Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding and Disclosures) Act 2013.
Despite the serious nature of the earlier allegations, FICAC concluded that insufficient evidence exists to prosecute Bainimarama under related provisions. This aligns with the pattern of previous investigations where Bainimarama has been cleared regarding various complaints, including allegations of improper financial declarations.
The closure of this investigation may contribute positively to the political climate in Fiji, as FICAC continues to underscore the importance of a thorough and fair legal process. This approach not only bolsters public confidence in governance but may also lay the groundwork for improvements in accountability and transparency within the government moving forward.
As Fiji navigates its political future, these reaffirmations of legal integrity are crucial for fostering trust among the electorate and promoting a more robust democratic framework.
