Epeli Balawa, a single father aged 50, was visibly moved when his daughter Repeka Koroi was announced as the Year Eight dux award winner at Vudibasoga Catholic School in Seaqaqa, Macuata. Overcome with emotion, Mr. Balawa dropped to his knees upon hearing the news.

Mr. Balawa, a yaqona farmer from Korovuli Village, expressed that his tears were those of joy, not only for Repeka’s academic achievement but also because she received a sponsorship letter from Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School, allowing her to continue her education and sporting pursuits. Repeka has already made her mark in athletics, winning gold medals in both the Under-14 girls’ 800 meters and 1500 meters at the Fiji Primary Schools Tucker Ice Cream Games last month.

After his wife left four years ago, Mr. Balawa has taken on the challenges of raising his four children alone. He shared how proud he is that Repeka followed in his footsteps as he was the dux of Bulavou District School in 1989.

Repeka, the second of four siblings, earned a score of 425 out of 500 in her exams. At just 14, she has dreams of becoming a primary school teacher and shares a hostel with her siblings, aged six, ten, and fifteen, returning home to visit their father every weekend. She often worries about him while at school, recalling moments when she would cry during dinner, anxious about whether he had eaten.

She also highlighted the sacrifices her father makes, waking up at 4 a.m. to prepare breakfast and get her younger siblings ready for school, despite the challenges he faces. Repeka dedicated her achievement to her father, hoping for his long-lasting health from God. She also expressed her gratitude to her teachers and coach, Iosefo Apisai, who played a crucial role in her athletic success.

This heartwarming story illustrates the resilience of a family forged in adversity and the power of perseverance. With the support of a devoted father and a community that recognizes talent, Repeka’s future shines brightly with potential and hope. Her story serves as a reminder of the incredible strength found in family bonds and the determination to succeed despite life’s challenges.
