Farmers Urged to Strategize: Tips for Boosting Yields and Market Success

Agriculture Minister Vatimi Rayalu has cautioned farmers about the consequences of poor planning, which can lead to market oversupply, price reductions, and frustration. He emphasized that farmers must recognize the limited capacity of markets for certain crops and plan their production accordingly.

During a recent meeting with yam farmers at Naqiroso Settlement in Lautoka, Rayalu highlighted the importance of collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture. He encouraged farmers to strengthen their ties with the Ministry to enhance productivity, ensure the right crops are planted at the right times, and effectively respond to market demands. This partnership is essential for managing challenges such as climate change and evolving market trends.

Rayalu’s message comes as good news for yam farmers in the Western Division, who recently shipped three tonnes of yams to Australia at $5 per kilogram. The same exporter is expected to require an additional 30 tonnes in the coming months, offering a promising opportunity for local farmers.

The Minister’s approach aligns with previous initiatives aimed at improving market access for farmers. The Ministry of Agriculture is actively conducting market demand assessments across various districts, providing essential support to local agricultural producers. By investing in better planning and infrastructure, including the construction of farm roads, the Ministry aims to enhance market accessibility, which is vital for increasing farmers’ profitability and food security.

These efforts reflect a hopeful trajectory for Fiji’s agricultural sector, indicating that with proper planning, collaboration, and support, farmers can successfully meet market demands while simultaneously increasing their yields and income. By fortifying the agricultural framework, Fiji has the potential to boost local food production and reduce dependency on imports, thereby fortifying its agricultural resilience.
