Family Left Homeless After Devastating Fire in Nausori

A family in Koroqaqa, located along Baulevu Road outside Nausori Town, has lost their home due to a fire that occurred on Wednesday morning. The National Fire Authority reported that the blaze originated from the storage area. The homeowner attempted to extinguish the flames using a garden hose, but was forced to flee as the fire rapidly spread.

The estimated damage to the four-bedroom house ranges between $80,000 and $90,000. Fire crews from the Nausori and Nakasi fire stations responded to the incident around 6 am. At the time of the fire, the homeowner, a 31-year-old taxi driver, was at home with his wife, two children, and mother.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing. NFA CEO Puamau Sowane voiced concerns over the increasing incidence of home fires. He noted that the NFA is enhancing its Integrated Community Fire Wardens and Emergency Response Framework, which is a training program conducted at no cost for local communities. This two-week intensive training focuses on firefighting techniques, fire prevention, basic first aid, and emergency response skills.
