The European Union is intensifying its commitment to advancing Fiji’s agricultural sector, with a special emphasis on small and medium-sized enterprises aimed at enhancing the economy, creating youth employment opportunities, and improving public health.

EU Ambassador to Fiji, Barbara Plinkert, emphasized that supporting Fiji is an ongoing priority under the Sustainable Transformation of Domestic Agri-Food Systems (STODAS) programme, which is being carried out in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization. This initiative is designed to aid micro, small, and medium-sized agribusinesses by helping them improve operations, increase production capabilities, and gain access to broader markets, including export opportunities.

Plinkert expressed strong belief in the potential for Fiji’s agricultural sector to drive economic growth. She remarked, “We believe strongly that this is an area where Fiji’s economy can grow further and provide many sources of income for Fijian people and also increase nutrition and health by providing healthy foods on the table of the Fijian people.”

Beyond immediate economic benefits, Plinkert highlighted the initiative’s role in offering better prospects for young people. She pointed out that agriculture presents a viable avenue for income generation, helping to circumvent various social challenges. The innovations showcased during agribusiness events demonstrate that agriculture has evolved beyond traditional practices, now incorporating value-adding techniques, creativity, and fresh product concepts.

The EU’s investment in Fiji’s agribusiness landscape aims not only to bolster sustainable economic growth but also to enhance food security and improve nutrition by ensuring better access to healthy, locally sourced food for the population. This approach reflects a holistic vision for the future of Fiji’s agricultural sector, prioritizing both economic vitality and the well-being of its citizens.
