The European Union has officially renewed its marine partnership with the Pacific region under the second phase of the Pacific – EU Marine Partnership, with a commitment of approximately $52 million through the year 2030. This significant initiative aims to enhance cooperation in ocean management and promote sustainable fisheries across the Pacific.

The program will be executed in collaboration with several key organizations, including the Pacific Community, the Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency, and the University of the South Pacific, along with the Office of the Pacific Ocean Commissioner.

At the signing ceremony in Suva, EU Ambassador to the Pacific, Barbara Plinkert, emphasized the shared responsibility both regions have in safeguarding ocean health, noting that this agreement symbolizes a long-term commitment to preserving marine resources.

FFA Director-General David Pakop highlighted the importance of this strategic partnership in delivering practical benefits for Pacific fisheries. He stated that the initiative intends to maximize sustainable returns while enhancing climate resilience, ensuring communities can benefit from ocean resources both now and in the future.

SPC Deputy Director Seci Waqabaca pointed out the critical need for strengthened regional capacity to address various challenges, including capacity gaps, climate pressures, and governance complexities. He remarked that these challenges present opportunities for growth and resilience.

Furthermore, USP Pro-Chancellor Siosiua Tuitalukua Tupou Utoikamanu indicated that the university would play a pivotal role in equipping future Pacific leaders with essential skills. He noted the importance of integrating indigenous knowledge with modern science, stating that healthy oceans are fundamental to livelihoods, identity, and food security throughout the region.

This renewed partnership aligns with broader strategic objectives, such as the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent and the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, reflecting a hopeful future for ocean sustainability and community resilience in the Pacific.
