Efforts to promote gender equality in science and technical fields in the Pacific are yielding positive results, as initiatives aimed at increasing female participation in energy, maritime, and geoscience sectors gain traction. Tara Chetty, representative of the Pacific Community’s Human Rights and Social Development Division, emphasized the importance of mentoring networks, leadership programs, and revisions to STEM curricula to inspire more women and girls to pursue careers in these fields.

Chetty highlighted that the Pacific Energy and Gender Strategic Action Plan aims to empower girls and women by creating pathways that encourage them to dream of becoming engineers and leaders in the energy sector. Despite recent funding challenges, emerging female engineers and climate professionals are demonstrating the return on investment of supporting women’s leadership.

This development is particularly significant given the existing statistics showing that women are drastically underrepresented in the energy sector across the Pacific, with only about 5% of technical positions occupied by women. According to insights from previous discussions, closing the gender gap could lead to a remarkable increase in GDP per capita, as retaining talented women in the workforce is essential for economic growth.

The collaborative approach that involves educational sectors, women’s organizations, and initiatives like the “Employ Women, Empower the Pacific” conference is key to breaking down harmful societal norms that restrict women’s opportunities. Workshops promoting gender diversity emphasize the considerable potential that women’s inclusion in various sectors holds for both economic advancement and community well-being.

In summary, the concerted efforts across the Pacific region are paving the way toward a more equitable professional landscape for women, with a hopeful outlook that future generations will see increased representation and opportunities in STEM fields.
