Empowering Women Entrepreneurs: How Starlink is Transforming Fiji’s Remote Regions

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Manoa Kamikamica, has highlighted how Starlink’s enhanced internet service is empowering women entrepreneurs in remote regions of Fiji. This improved connectivity enables these women to access government programs and expand their businesses beyond traditional markets.

While Kamikamica recognized the challenges faced by these entrepreneurs—primarily limited funding and market access—he expressed optimism about the capabilities of women in remote areas to grow their businesses. To assist them, the Ministry is deploying outreach teams to isolated communities such as Lakeba and Rotuma, aiming to provide direct support and resources.

Kamikamica urged rural communities to leverage local governance structures for assistance, encouraging residents to engage with provincial and TIKINA representatives to ensure their needs and ideas reach the government. He stated, “We’re doing all sorts of ways to actually engage,” indicating a proactive approach to foster communication and support.

Additionally, the ministry is collaborating with the South Pacific Business Development and Soqosoqo Vakamarama to further bolster women entrepreneurs and promote the establishment of cooperatives. The commitment to empowering women not only supports their individual business ambitions but also strengthens community resilience and economic sustainability.

These efforts align with the broader government initiatives aimed at enhancing connectivity in remote areas through projects like the rollout of Starlink services. This aligns with previous announcements regarding the government’s dedication to improving internet access to bridge the digital divide, thereby creating greater socio-economic opportunities for underserved communities.

This initiative shows a hopeful outlook for rural entrepreneurship in Fiji, as it combines technology access with targeted support to help women flourish in their business endeavors. The emphasis on collaboration between government and local communities reflects a commitment to ensuring that all Fijians have an opportunity to thrive in an increasingly digital and interconnected world.
