Strong Wind Warning for Fiji’s Southern Lau, Yasayasa Moala and Kadavu as Southeast gusts reach 55 km/h (May 2, 2026)

Stormy weather over Fiji's coastline with rough seas and dark clouds.

A slow‑moving trough of low pressure over Fiji is keeping the country unsettled, with a prevailing moderate to strong southeast wind flow over the southern islands and a strong wind warning in force for the Southern Lau Group, Yasayasa Moala, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands. Expect breezy to fresh conditions with rough seas across the south, and scattered showers and thunderstorms at times elsewhere.

For the Southern Lau Group, Yasayasa Moala, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands the forecast is for southeast winds averaging about 40 km/h with gusts up to 55 km/h and rough seas. Elsewhere across the group winds are expected to be moderate to fresh from the southeast with moderate to rough seas. The same wind pattern is expected to persist into Monday for eastern and southern Viti Levu (from the Coral Coast and Sigatoka through Suva up to Rakiraki), the Yasawa group, Vatulele, Beqa, Lau and Lomaiviti groups and nearby smaller islands.

Showers and thunderstorms will be most frequent and heaviest in and around Greater Suva/Nausori–Tailevu, Serua–Namosi–Naitasiri, the Lomaiviti and Lau groups and Kadavu, where occasional heavy falls and isolated thunderstorms are likely. Cloudier periods with some showers and isolated thunderstorms are forecast for Rakiraki, southern Bua and Cakaudrove provinces, while most other districts will see partly cloudy conditions with isolated afternoon or evening showers and thunderstorms. Localised heavy falls may lead to flash flooding of low‑lying and flood‑prone areas.

For urban and coastal population centres: Navua, Suva and Nausori can expect occasional showers with isolated heavy falls and thunderstorms and temperatures around a low of 23°C and a high of 29°C; the same conditions and temperature range apply for Natadradave/Korovou. Nadi, Lautoka and Ba should see partly cloudy skies with isolated afternoon or evening showers and thunderstorms, highs near 31°C. The Coral Coast and Sigatoka are partly cloudy with some showers and possible thunderstorms (highs around 30–31°C), while Tavua and Rakiraki may see similar conditions with isolated heavy falls at times.

Island groups and northern towns: the Yasawa/Mamanuca group will be partly cloudy with afternoon or evening showers and isolated thunderstorms (min 23°C, max about 30–31°C) with the same southeast wind gusts to 55 km/h. Labasa may reach the low 30s with afternoon or evening showers and isolated thunderstorms. Savusavu, Nabouwalu and Taveuni can expect cloudy periods or occasional showers with isolated thunderstorms and highs near 30–31°C. Rotuma remains under a trough with cloudy periods, some showers and isolated thunderstorms, easing to occasional showers from tomorrow with moderate southeasterlies and moderate to rough seas. Mariners and small‑craft operators should exercise caution in rough and gusty conditions, and residents in low‑lying or flood‑prone areas should be alert to the risk of localised flash flooding.
