In a significant development for housing accessibility, forty-seven tenants of the Public Rental Board (PRB) Estate in Narere, Nasinu, were presented with offer letters to purchase their homes at highly reduced prices. This initiative, unveiled by Minister for Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, represents a major step in promoting home ownership among long-standing PRB tenants.
During the ceremony, Minister Nalumisa described the event as an empowering moment for the recipients, urging them to embrace this path from uncertainty to stability. “This has been a long-awaited dream for many of you, and it is a chance to move from tenancy to ownership,” he expressed.
The properties are being sold significantly below market value, allowing tenants to secure financing through the Housing Authority or other banks, while also providing the option to utilize their savings or the Fiji National Provident Fund for the purchase. This initiative aligns with the government’s national housing policy, which prioritizes support for low-income families and vulnerable communities.
Minister Nalumisa underscored the importance of community collaboration in addressing broader social issues, including the challenges posed by drugs and rising rates of HIV/AIDS among youth. He acknowledged local leaders and committee members for their advocacy in making this opportunity possible for residents.
Similar efforts have been previously highlighted, such as the Fiji Home Ownership Grant, which assisted 113 households with funding, as well as the Lagilagi Low Cost Housing Project, which has provided stable housing for many families. These initiatives illustrate the government’s ongoing endeavors to improve living conditions and foster community stability by promoting homeownership.
Notably, the excitement shared among recipients reflects a transformative moment in their lives, offering a hopeful outlook on securing permanent homes and contributing positively to their communities. As such housing initiatives advance, they hold the potential to uplift many families striving for better living conditions and stability in their lives.
