In a recent session at the Lautoka High Court, David Heritage, a key figure in Fiji’s largest drug trafficking case, testified that he was coerced into participating in a methamphetamine operation after being threatened at gunpoint by an individual associated with the Russian Mafia. Heritage claimed that the perpetrator warned him against contacting the police, instilling a deep fear for both his safety and the safety of his children.
Heritage acknowledged being promised a substantial sum of $2 million for his role in the drug operation but maintained that his primary motivation was the safety of his family, stating he felt trapped by the threats made against him. State Prosecutor John Rabuku challenged Heritage’s claims, suggesting financial gain was his primary incentive, and questioned why he did not report the threats to authorities. Heritage attributed his silence to fear of retribution.
The credibility of Heritage’s narrative received support from a civilian witness who corroborated that he had seen a white man brandishing a gun at Heritage’s head at Vuda Marina last December. This witness, too, recounted his own fears that prevented him from reporting the incident to police, asserting he was not fabricating his account, nor working in concert with Heritage to deceive the court.
The ongoing trial involves over 4.15 tonnes of methamphetamine and has drawn significant attention due to the complexities of organized crime operating within Fiji.
