Drua’s Dominance: A Home Win Marks a Turning Point in Super Rugby

The Swire Shipping Fijian Drua achieved an impressive victory, securing their eighth consecutive win at home by dominating the Waratahs 28-14 during the Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific Round 10 match held in Lautoka. This victory is crucial as it keeps the Drua’s hopes alive for a top six finish in the competition.

The match took place at the Drua’s well-recognized stronghold, Churchill Park, where they managed to maintain a clean record this season. Fly-half Isaiah Armstrong-Ravula opened the scoring with two successful penalties in the early minutes, placing the Drua ahead 6-0. Following his lead, backrower Motikai Murray, returning from a suspension, scored the team’s first try of the match after breaking through multiple defenders, which Armstrong-Ravula converted to extend the lead to 13-0.

Despite the Waratahs making strategic substitutions to intensify their efforts, including bringing in Langi Gleeson, Drua maintained the upper hand. Gleeson did manage to narrow the gap with a try, but the Drua’s offense was relentless. Winger Ponipate Loganimasi continued the charge by scoring his sixth try of the season, extending the score to 18-7 by halftime.

In the second half, Drua increased their lead with another successful penalty from Armstrong-Ravula. The Waratahs responded through Julian Haven’s try, but consistent pressure from the Drua led them to secure a penalty try just before the final whistle, capping a critical win.

This victory not only reflects the team’s current strong form but also echoes previous challenges they faced, including narrow defeats against tough opponents, highlighting their emergence as a competitive force in Super Rugby. Coach Glen Jackson has noted the importance of teamwork and discipline, which have recently shown marked improvement.

The Drua’s ability to capitalize on their chances, combined with the unwavering support from their local fans, suggests a promising future for the team as they strive for success in the remainder of the season. This latest win indeed reflects a turning point, providing renewed optimism for the Drua’s aspirations and their dedicated supporters.
