A resident of Dreke Village has reiterated the urgent need for a permanent bridge as heavy rains have led to flooding that isolates the community. Melania Rakanace Tadrau expressed her concerns to The Fiji Times, describing the difficult circumstances faced by villagers on Wednesday when elders were forced to transport children through rising waters to ensure their safety.
Tadrau highlighted that the absence of a bridge has been a long-term problem for the community, resulting in challenges for the residents for decades. She emphasized the critical need for a bridge to facilitate safe access, particularly during heavy rain when water levels rise rapidly, cutting off the sole route into the village.
“This situation endangers lives and complicates travel for families, schoolchildren, workers, and the elderly,” she explained. She urged the government and pertinent authorities to take swift action to help construct a proper bridge.
A bridge would significantly enhance safety and accessibility for the residents of Dreke Village, ultimately improving their overall well-being. The call for infrastructure development reflects a common concern in many rural areas, where natural events can severely disrupt daily life. Providing the necessary support could foster resilience and ensure that communities can withstand the challenges posed by adverse weather conditions.
