Long-time letter writer for the Fiji Times, Donald Singh, has been honored once more as he clinches the Letter of the Year award for the second consecutive year. The recognition is a testament to his steadfast commitment to public discourse, with Mr. Singh contributing letters to the editor for over 25 years.

During a ceremony held in Suva, Mr. Singh received an SRS-ULT1000 ULT Tower 10 Party Speaker along with other prizes. His proud family, including his daughter and son, joined him to celebrate this significant achievement.

In his remarks at the event, Mr. Singh emphasized that the recognition transcends mere accolades. “You know, everyone there is a winner. The fact that a person is able to pick up the pen and write a letter that makes it into the papers means it was worthy,” he expressed. Despite his win, he believed other letters were deserving too, stating, “If it wasn’t me, then it definitely would’ve gone to another letter writer.”

Mr. Singh insists that his love for writing is not motivated by the desire for rewards. He conveyed, “This will encourage me to continue writing, but not for a prize. When we write for a prize, we are competing. It’s not a competition. Even if the paper takes away the prizes, I’ll still write.” His unwavering dedication serves as an inspiration for aspiring letter writers across Fiji.

Fred Wesley, the Fiji Times editor-in-chief, acknowledged the contributions of all letter writers who engage with the publication, underscoring their role in holding power accountable. “It’s a great way to feel the pulse of the nation,” he remarked, noting the diverse range of issues that compel writers to share their thoughts through letters.

Wesley also reflected on the selection process for the award, highlighting the challenges involved in choosing from the many submissions. Among the final contenders this year were letters touching on critical topics such as medical challenges, the impact of social media, and the essence of democracy.

Donald Singh’s winning letter, titled “I can now!”, resonated deeply, focusing on the significance of freedom of expression and the need for civic engagement in governance. The piece encouraged readers to understand their roles in the democratic process and underscored the importance of collective participation in nation-building.

Ultimately, the Fiji Times continues to provide a platform for individuals to express their opinions on matters they are passionate about, fostering meaningful discussions within the community. The celebration of exemplary letter writers highlights the power of voice in shaping public conversation and the future of the nation. As we step into the New Year, the Fiji Times extends gratitude to all letter writers, encouraging them to continue sharing their insights and perspectives.
