The HFC Bank Stadium was alive with excitement yesterday as Dilkusha Methodist High School (DMHS) hosted its annual inter-house athletics competition, showcasing both spirited rivalry and exceptional athletic talent across various track and field events.
Principal Satyendra Singh applauded the enthusiastic participation and competitive drive evident among the school’s four houses, noting that while it’s too soon to predict the overall medal standings, the competition is tightly contested. “There is fierce competition among the four houses, and it’s clear the houses are neck and neck,” he remarked.
Yaka House, which has held the championship title for more than five years, is particularly motivated to retain their crown this year. DMHS boasts a commendable history in athletics, especially highlighted by their achievements at the Fiji Finals, with their last gold medal win occurring in 2019. The school is optimistic about making a significant impression this year.
“We have some promising athletes, and after today’s events, we’ll identify who to groom for the NNN zone and the Coca-Cola Games,” Singh stated. He anticipates that around 10 to 15 athletes will be selected to represent the school in these upcoming competitions.
The strength of DMHS lies in a diverse array of events, including high jumps, sprints, and long jumps. Singh emphasized the school’s commitment to a well-rounded education, stating, “Our students are not just excelling in academics but also in sports like athletics, rugby, hockey, and netball.”
He also rallied the school’s alumni and supporters to show their backing for the athletes. “We encourage old scholars, parents, and guardians to come out in numbers and support Dilkusha Methodist High School. Our students display great discipline and sportsmanship both on and off the field,” Singh urged.
With strong community backing and a roster of talented athletes, DMHS is poised for an exciting competitive season ahead, eager to add more medals to their noteworthy legacy at the Fiji Finals. The anticipation for this year’s athletics events underscores the school’s vibrant spirit and dedication to nurturing future champions.
