Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) officers successfully uncovered a marijuana smuggling attempt this past Saturday at the Naboro prison complex. During a routine inspection, officers noticed an unusual characteristic in the sole of a pair of flip-flops delivered by the wife of an inmate. Upon closer examination, it was revealed that the soles were glued together, and when separated, marijuana rolls were discovered hidden inside.
The incident was promptly reported to the Fiji Police Force, leading to the arrest of the woman suspected of attempting to smuggle the drugs. This occurrence is part of the ongoing efforts by FCS to combat drug smuggling in the prison system, where similar trends have been noted in recent months. Deputy Commissioner Auta Moceisuva emphasized that smugglers have increasingly employed creative tactics, such as hiding drugs in unusual items like footwear, in response to heightened security measures.
This recent discovery aligns with previous findings where substantial amounts of marijuana and suki have been seized in and around the Naboro prison farm, demonstrating a proactive approach by the FCS in adapting to evolving drug smuggling strategies. The efforts of the FCS highlight the importance of community cooperation in preventing drug infiltration and ensuring the safety of the prison environment for both inmates and staff alike.
As the situation evolves, continued vigilance and public support are essential in addressing and ultimately reducing drug-related activities within the prison system, fostering a safer and more secure environment for everyone involved.
