A couple faced the Suva Magistrate Court this afternoon in connection with allegations of corruption involving approximately $500,000. Edua Biuvuli Matai, the former Principal Accounts Officer of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, is charged by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) with abuse of office for personal gain. His wife, Taucilagi Duri, has been charged with aiding and abetting this abuse of office.

The allegations suggest that between November 2019 and June 2022, while employed in the civil service, Matai allegedly engaged in arbitrary activities by not declaring his personal interest in a business called Ink Escape Supplies. He is accused of adding this business as a vendor for the RFMF and facilitating payments totaling $467,616.40 to Ink Escape Supplies, which reportedly harmed the rights of the RFMF.

During their court appearance before Senior Magistrate Sufia Hamza, the couple was remanded due to their inability to provide sureties. The magistrate instructed the couple’s lawyer to secure sureties who are older and have authority over the accused. While FICAC did not oppose bail, they requested strict conditions, including a non-cash bond of $5,000, monthly reporting to FICAC, and the requirement to surrender travel documents. The case’s bail hearing has been adjourned for further consideration.

This case underscores the ongoing efforts by FICAC to combat corruption in government positions. It serves as a reminder of the importance of transparency and accountability within public services, highlighting that individuals in such roles must maintain integrity to uphold the trust of the community they serve.

In summary, this situation reveals a serious challenge regarding ethical conduct within public service in Fiji, yet it also represents a proactive step by authorities to deal with corrupt practices and maintain integrity in governance.
