Corruption Charges Rock Fiji Broadcasting Leadership: What’s Next?

The case involving former Fiji Broadcasting Corporation (FBC) CEO Riyaz Sayed-Khaiyum and former Chief Financial Officer Vimlesh Sagar is set to continue in court on June 3. The two men recently appeared before Magistrate Charles Ratakele in Suva, where they face various charges related to alleged abuse of office and dishonesty. The court has provided a 14-day window for them to address pre-trial issues, with their bail extended in the meantime.

Sayed-Khaiyum is charged with one count of abuse of office and one count of general dishonesty causing a financial loss, while Sagar faces one count of general dishonesty resulting in a loss. The allegations involve actions taken between September 1 and November 1, 2022, where Sayed-Khaiyum allegedly initiated five legal proceedings without the approval of the FBC Board, incurring costs totaling $138,813. This is part of a broader picture where he is accused of pursuing actions detrimental to the company’s interests.

Both individuals have pleaded not guilty to the charges against them, reflecting their assertion of innocence. The implications of this case extend beyond the individuals involved, emphasizing the need for stringent accountability within public service roles. The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) is expected to call a number of witnesses as the legal proceedings unfold, which highlights the ongoing commitment to ensuring integrity in governance.

This situation presents a critical opportunity for reinforcing ethical standards and improving corporate governance within Fiji’s public institutions. As the next court date approaches, there is a shared hope that clarity and resolution will arise from these proceedings, contributing to a stronger framework for accountability and transparency in public service management.
