China’s Embassy in Fiji refuted allegations that Beijing is seeking to establish a military base in the Pacific Islands. The statement followed concerns raised by Fiji’s Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who emphasized the need for cooperation among Pacific nations while acknowledging China’s growing influence in the region.

The Embassy’s spokesperson categorically denied any intentions for military expansion, labeling such claims as “false narratives.” They underlined that China’s engagement in the Pacific focuses primarily on developmental projects, such as infrastructure enhancements that improve the livelihoods of local populations rather than military objectives.

Rabuka has voiced Fiji’s opposition to foreign military bases on its territory, reinforcing that Fiji does not require such facilities to assert power.
