Call for Tougher Boxer Safety Regulations After Tragic Death

Former middleweight boxing champion of Fiji, Jeremaia Tadu, is urging the Boxing Commission of Fiji (BCF) to implement stricter safety measures for athletes following the tragic passing of featherweight boxer Ubayd Haider. Haider collapsed after suffering a technical knockout (TKO) in the ninth round of his fight against Runqi Zhou on October 26 in Nadi.

Tadu expressed his sorrow over the incident, highlighting the need for closer scrutiny of referees in the ring. He pointed out that it is crucial for referees to identify when a boxer is no longer defending themselves adequately. “If a boxer does not respond after four or five punches, the referee should intervene and stop the fight,” he stated.

In light of the ongoing investigation, Tadu emphasized the importance of continuing boxing promotions, acknowledging the role the sport plays in the livelihoods of many. He called for the establishment of stronger regulations to ensure the safety of all participants moving forward.

Tadu, who began boxing in 1979, has an impressive record of 73 wins, seven draws, and seven losses from 87 fights. He made his way to Viti Levu from his native Cicia in Lau, originally coming with a rugby team. His boxing career took off after training with Bir Singh’s Boxing Club in Lautoka, where he was inspired by the success of champions that came from the gym.

Celebrating his 70th birthday on November 2, Tadu continues to be an influential figure in the boxing community, advocating for the sport while ensuring the safety of its competitors.

This unfortunate incident highlights the vulnerability of athletes in contact sports, and Tadu’s call for enhanced safety protocols reflects the concern within the sporting community to prevent such tragedies in the future. As the boxing world comes together to strengthen safety measures, there is hope that future events will prioritize the well-being of their athletes, allowing the sport to thrive responsibly.
