The Auckland Blues showcased a dominant performance over the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua, triumphing 34-5 in Round 13 of the Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific season, held at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. The victory marked a significant moment for the Blues, who started strong with prop Marcel Renata scoring just six minutes into the game, setting a confident tone.
Following Renata’s early try, scrumhalf Taufa Funaki added another score at the 22-minute mark, while a penalty kick from star player Beauden Barrett extended the lead to 15-0 by the 28th minute. Blues forward Joshua Fusitu’a further increased the lead, crossing the line for a try right before halftime, making it 22-0 at the break.
The Blues continued their offensive onslaught in the second half, with Angus Ta’avao scoring in the 47th minute, followed by Cole Forbes sealing the victory with another try in the 67th minute. The Drua managed to get on the scoresheet late in the game with a consolation try from Selestino Ravutaumada in the 76th minute, but it was insufficient to alter the match outcome.
Despite the defeat, Drua captain Mesake Doge expressed pride in his team’s effort. He stated, “The boys came out fighting but yeah, they got the better of us today,” acknowledging the determination the Drua put forth during the match.
Looking ahead, the Drua will face the Western Force next Saturday at Churchill Park in Lautoka. This upcoming match presents an opportunity for the team to regroup and build on their resilience shown this season. Fans remain hopeful as the Drua look to harness their fighting spirit for improved results in future matches, building on their recent performances and rallying around the unity of their community.
The Blues’ victory reflects their strength in contention for the playoffs, while the Drua’s determination to rise after setbacks embodies the spirit of Fijian rugby. This combined narrative strengthens the community’s anticipation and support for both teams as they navigate the rest of the season.
