The Fijian Broadcasting Corporation (FBC) has alerted the public about a fake news article making rounds online that falsely features its branding. The article, titled “PM says they will take action against NFP,” has been manipulated and re-shared by an unidentified source.
Although the headline resembles a legitimate article published by FBC News on May 28 of the previous year, the context and date have been altered. FBC emphasizes that this altered content is not an official release from their organization.
In their statement, FBC urged the public in Fiji and internationally to rely exclusively on verified news shared through their official channels, including the FBC website, social media platforms, and traditional media broadcasts. They cautioned against accepting articles disseminated by individuals on platforms like Facebook that do not directly link to their official sources.
The original article by former Senior Multimedia Journalist Filipe Naikaso covered comments made by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka concerning government actions against the National Federation Party for voting against a motion to endorse salary increases for Members of Parliament—a recommendation from a parliamentary committee.
FBC reiterated its commitment to ethical and accurate journalism and encouraged the public to engage in responsible information consumption by confirming the authenticity of news from credible sources. This incident not only highlights the ongoing issue of misinformation but also strengthens the call for media literacy among the public, emphasizing that by staying informed through trustworthy platforms, the community can contribute to better informed public discussions.
