The Boston Basketball Club is excited to return to the Basketball Fiji Cup, marking the tournament’s comeback after a three-year break. Coach Jordan Dokonivalu highlighted the importance of this event, one of the largest national club competitions in Fiji, which fans and teams have eagerly anticipated.
Expressing the team’s enthusiasm, Dokonivalu mentioned that the long wait has only increased their eagerness to compete. “We’re excited and we’re looking forward to this competition, everyone’s been waiting for long. Three years has been quite a wait, but everyone is keen to compete,” he stated. The competition is set to take place from March 13 to 15 at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva.
This year’s edition will host 16 teams—eight in men’s and eight in women’s categories—representing different associations across Fiji. The tournament serves as a stage for local talent while also acting as a selection ground for national coaches who will be scouting players for the upcoming 2025 Melanesia Cup in the Solomon Islands.
The Fiji Cup has historically been crucial for fostering community support and interest in basketball, and its revival is a sign of renewed enthusiasm for the sport. The defending champions in the men’s division are the USP Islanders, with Dynamic Redz holding the title in the women’s category. Other notable teams to watch include the Boston and Totokia for the men’s side and Tamahine and Natikula Ballers in the women’s bracket.
Fans are encouraged to participate in this thrilling event, with a minimal entry fee of $5, ensuring it is an accessible and family-friendly outing. The resurgence of the Basketball Fiji Cup not only heralds a return of competitive basketball but also promises to be a delightful experience for fans and a significant opportunity for emerging players in Fiji.
Overall, the revival of this tournament represents a hopeful return to normalcy for the sport, creating excitement and anticipation within the local basketball community.
