Thousands of demonstrators have taken to the streets of Bangkok, demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra following the leak of a contentious phone call she had with former Cambodian leader Hun Sen. During the call, which addressed an incident on the border between Thailand and Cambodia, she referred to Hun Sen as “uncle” and criticized a Thai military commander for his remarks during the dispute.

The leaked conversation has incited public outrage, prompting Paetongtarn to apologize while asserting that her comments were intended as a “negotiation technique.” In response to the protests, she acknowledged the people’s right to demonstrate peacefully as she planned to visit flood-affected regions in northern Thailand.

The rally was notably the largest since the Pheu Thai party took office in 2023, with participants standing firm in the face of monsoon rains at the Victory Monument. Demonstrators waved Thai flags and held signs expressing their dissatisfaction, labeling the Prime Minister as an “enemy of the state.” Protest leader Parnthep Pourpongpan emphasized the need for Paetongtarn to resign, stating she is “the problem.”

Among those who attended was 70-year-old Seri Sawangmue, who traveled from northern Thailand specifically to join the protest, voicing his concern for the nation’s sovereignty and questioning the Prime Minister’s fitness for leadership. He expressed a palpable concern, reflecting on his experiences through various political crises in the past.

In light of the ongoing border tensions exacerbated by military activity on both sides, as outlined in reports regarding Thailand’s military posture and discussions for de-escalation, the situation highlights a critical point in diplomatic relations between Thailand and Cambodia. Although the Prime Minister has pledged to cease further discussions with Hun Sen, skepticism persists among Thai citizens about potential influences from the Cambodian leader over her administration.

Overall, this moment presents an opportunity for the people of Thailand to express their desire for greater accountability in leadership and serves as a reminder of the power of public voice in political matters. As protests continue, there remains hope that calls for change will bring about a more responsive and responsible government.
