Bali Nine: Five Members Return Home After 19-Year Ordeal

The last five members of the “Bali Nine,” an Australian drug trafficking group, have returned to Australia after successful diplomatic negotiations between the Australian and Indonesian governments. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed that Matthew Norman, Scott Rush, Martin Stephens, Si Yi Chen, and Michael Czugaj are now back on Australian soil following their release from Indonesian prison, where they served over 19 years.

The group was arrested in 2005 while attempting to smuggle over 8 kilograms of heroin from Bali, Indonesia. Albanese stated that it was time for these individuals to come home. The men’s transfer took place on Sunday morning in Bali and they arrived in Darwin, Australia, although Indonesia made it clear that no pardons were granted during the repatriation process.

The return of the “Bali Nine” members comes after the execution of two ringleaders, Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran, in 2015, which had strained diplomatic relations. The only woman in the group was released in 2018, and another member died of cancer in the same year. Albanese expressed gratitude to Indonesia for its cooperation, emphasizing the strong bilateral ties and mutual respect shared by the two nations.

Yusril Ihza Mahendra, Indonesia’s senior minister for legal affairs, explained that this repatriation was reciprocal, suggesting that future requests for the transfer of Indonesian prisoners in Australia would also be considered. The five men are now permanently banned from entering Indonesia.
