Heavy rain is currently affecting Australia’s east coast, leading to severe flooding and leaving communities grappling with the aftermath. In the Hunter region and mid-north coast, a police officer and a 60-year-old woman encountered floodwaters on a road near Dorrigo. The officer deemed the water “ankle deep” but advised the woman against proceeding. Tragically, she later phoned the officer to say she was in trouble and was subsequently found dead in her vehicle. Additionally, the body of a 63-year-old man was discovered on the veranda of a home at Moto, and another man in his 30s was found in floodwaters near Port Macquarie. The search is ongoing for another missing individual.
Officials emphasize the extreme danger of floodwaters, urging the public to stay clear of affected areas to avoid further tragedies. NSW Police Assistant Commissioner David Waddell highlighted the emotional toll on first responders involved in these incidents.
As the flooding continues to disrupt lives and infrastructure, with thousands of homes without power and over 100 schools closed, disaster assistance has been expanded, providing support for 19 affected areas. Legal Aid NSW is offering free consultations for those facing denied insurance claims and housing concerns.
Specialist disaster researchers, like Mahdi Sedighkia from the Australian National University, underscore the pressing need for a reassessment of flood risk management to face the increasing intensity and frequency of extreme weather events caused by climate change.
