FIJI GLOBAL NEWS

Beyond the headline

A heavy rain alert remains in force for the whole Fiji group as a slow‑moving trough of low pressure drifts southeastward over the islands. A moist easterly wind flow is also in place, bringing cloud, showers and occasional thunderstorms that are expected to affect the country through early tomorrow.

The most significant rainfall and isolated heavy falls are expected over the Yasawa and Mamanuca group, the whole of Viti Levu, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, southern parts of Bua and Cakaudrove provinces, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, and the Lau and Lomaiviti groups. Elsewhere across Fiji, occasional rain is forecast with afternoon or evening thunderstorms and isolated heavy falls possible in many areas. Showers are expected to ease to more scattered activity from tomorrow, but localised heavy falls remain possible.

Localised heavy downpours may lead to flash flooding in low‑lying and flood‑prone areas, so residents in vulnerable locations should remain alert. Moderate easterly winds will prevail, fresh at times, and seas are forecast to be moderate to rough — conditions that may affect small craft and coastal activities.

Looking ahead to Saturday, occasional showers are forecast for Serua‑Namosi, Navua‑Suva‑Nausori, Tailevu‑Naitasiri, Ra‑Rakiraki, Kadavu and nearby islands, southern Bua and Cakaudrove provinces, Taveuni and nearby islands, and the Lau and Lomaiviti groups. Elsewhere should be largely fine apart from possible afternoon or evening showers and isolated thunderstorms. Winds are expected to be moderate to fresh and gusty at times, with seas remaining moderate to rough.

Local forecasts reflect the wider picture: Navua, Suva and Nausori can expect occasional rain with afternoon or evening thunderstorms and isolated heavy falls (tomorrow’s temperatures about 23–30°C, with Saturday around 23–31°C). Nadi, Lautoka and Ba should see showers becoming frequent and increasing to rain later today, easing to scattered showers from tomorrow (temps near 23–32°C). Labasa will have showers increasing to rain later today and then mostly fine apart from isolated afternoon or evening showers (tomorrow 21–32°C). Rotuma will see occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms under the moist easterly flow (23–31°C).
