A heavy rain alert remains in force for the whole of Fiji, and a coastal inundation alert continues for southern coastal areas of the Coral Coast–Sigatoka, the Mamanuca islands, Vatulele, Kadavu and southern Lau. A trough of low pressure over the group is bringing widespread cloud, showers and rain, while a low pressure system far to the south is generating moderate southwesterly swells that are affecting sea conditions.
Most places will see occasional rain with isolated thunderstorms and heavy falls. Localised heavy falls may produce flash flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas. Coastal sea flooding is likely during high tides in the named southern coastal zones — communities there should prepare for higher than normal water levels along shoreline areas. For full details on the alerts, refer to the special weather bulletins at https://www.met.gov.fj/alerts/.
Tomorrow the rain is expected to ease in many districts to some showers or partly cloudy periods, though afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms with isolated heavy falls remain possible. Areas specifically mentioned to see easing conditions include Serua–Namosi, Navua–Suva–Nausori, Tailevu–Naitasiri, Ra–Rakiraki, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, southern Bua and Cakaudrove provinces, Taveuni and nearby islands, and the Lau and Lomaiviti groups. Winds will be moderate easterly to northerly, tending easterly, with moderate seas and continued moderate southwesterly swells.
The outlook for Friday shows cloudy periods with some showers across the same provinces and island groups, while elsewhere should be mostly fine apart from the chance of afternoon or evening showers. Isolated thunderstorms and heavy falls are still possible. Winds are expected to freshen from the east at times and may be gusty, with seas becoming moderate to rough.
Local forecasts carry similar messages: Navua/Suva/Nausori and Natadradave/Korovou expect occasional rain and isolated thunderstorms with possible heavy falls — tomorrow’s temperatures around 23 to 30°C (Navua/Suva/Nausori up to 30°C) and easing to showers. Yasawa/Mamanuca, Sigatoka/Coral Coast, Nadi/Lautoka/Ba, Tavua/Rakiraki, Labasa, Savusavu, Nabouwalu, Taveuni, Lau and Lomaiviti, and Kadavu all report occasional rain with isolated or isolated heavy thunderstorms and a gradual easing trend for many areas tomorrow. Rotuma has a slow-moving trough with occasional heavy showers and a few thunderstorms, easing from tomorrow under moderate northeasterly winds and moderate seas. Mariners and coastal residents should take care with the moderate swells and the likelihood of coastal inundation at high tide, and those in low-lying areas should remain alert to the risk of flash flooding.
