Sevu Reece, a prominent player for the All Blacks and Crusaders, has been identified as the sports star who recently admitted to a charge of wilful damage following an incident at a party in Christchurch. During a sentencing hearing with Judge Katie Elkin, Reece was granted a discharge without conviction, marking the second time he has avoided a conviction for a past offense. In 2018, he received a similar discharge after pleading guilty to common assault involving his then-partner.
Reece’s recent incident involved two charges that were later reduced to a single count of wilful damage. The situation unfolded after guests at the party asked Reece to leave due to his disrespectful behavior. He then entered a car with keys left inside and accelerated into the victim’s garage, causing substantial damage before fleeing on foot.
Reece appeared in court with his current partner, Kiri Howell, and sought a discharge, emphasizing the potential consequences of a conviction on his professional rugby career and travel opportunities. The prosecution opposed this discharge, expressing concerns about the implications of repeated leniency.

In her ruling, Judge Elkin stated that the consequences of a conviction would be disproportionate to the gravity of Reece’s actions. She ordered him to pay over NZ$2000 in reparations and expressed confidence in Reece’s potential for rehabilitation, stating that his actions were not indicative of a likelihood to re-offend.
