Apolosi Lewaqai has been appointed as the acting Commissioner for the Northern Division while continuing his role as the Commissioner for the Western Division. This decision comes during a critical leadership transition aimed at maintaining continuity in government operations and the advancement of development projects in the North.
The Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development has emphasized the necessity of this interim arrangement following the medical leave of the Northern Commissioner Uraia Rainima and the recent departure of Setareki Dakuiboca, the Northern Division Divisional Planning Officer. In response to these changes, Minister for Rural and Maritime Development Mosese Bulitavu, alongside Acting Northern Commissioner Lewaqai, convened with heads of government departments at Macuata House to reaffirm their commitment to the development of Vanua Levu and its surrounding maritime communities.
In addition to Lewaqai’s appointment, several other temporary leadership changes have been announced within the Ministry. Deputy Secretary Mitieli Cama is now acting as Permanent Secretary, and Josefa Navuku, the Commissioner for the Central Division, is serving as Acting Deputy Secretary. Meanwhile, Mateo Naiveli, the Divisional Planning Officer for Central, has stepped up as the acting Divisional Commissioner.
These interim leadership placements have been designed to ensure that all operations, ongoing development programs, and disaster risk management responsibilities remain uninterrupted throughout the transitional phase. The Ministry has reassured the public and stakeholders that services will continue without disruption, reflecting a positive outlook for the affected divisions and communities.
