After seven years of cherishing their love, Richard Ortega Marseu and Leba Talei celebrated their union in a heartfelt wedding ceremony at the Wesley City Mission Church in Suva on December 12, 2024. Their journey began in 2014, when they met at church, and what started as a mere acquaintance soon blossomed into a deep and meaningful relationship.
Richard, a 38-year-old soldier from Paptea, Rotuma, and Leba, 36, a dedicated professional in the hospitality industry with Samoan roots, shared how their bond grew stronger through faith. Leba recalled how she noticed Richard’s neat attire when they first met, which caught her attention among the young men at church. Over time, their love endured the trials of youth and blossomed even further when they decided to intertwine their lives with their faith in Jesus.
Both expressed gratitude for how their relationship evolved. Richard shared that even though beginning their journey together came with challenges, especially after he joined the army a couple of years in, it ultimately brought them closer. They cultivated their love through shared goals and spiritual commitments, highlighting the importance of having God at the center of their union.
The couple engaged in a traditional iTaukei ceremony called ilakovi, wherein Richard sought Leba’s family’s blessing, leading up to their wedding day. He described the experience as harmonious, expressing his joy at having such strong family support.
On their special day, Richard donned his military uniform while the wedding featured a white and gold color theme, symbolizing purity and prosperity. The ceremony included a traditional hair cutting ritual known as ‘ofiag sope,’ a significant custom in Rotuman weddings.
In their vows, Richard emphasized that their marriage was a promise to God, reinforcing their belief that a strong spiritual foundation is crucial to weathering life’s challenges. They also made an effort to acknowledge those who supported them throughout their journey, from family to friends, and expressed special thanks to their wedding planner for ensuring a smooth and enjoyable experience.
The couple’s reception took place at Central Cuisine Restaurant, showcasing how love and gratitude were woven seamlessly into their celebration. Richard and Leba’s story serves as a beautiful reminder of the strength found in faith, patience, and the power of love to overcome obstacles—a hopeful narrative that inspires others as they begin their journey together.
