Epeli Balawa, a devoted single father from Korovuli Village, was filled with emotion as he dropped to his knees upon hearing his daughter Repeka Koroi’s name announced as the Year Eight dux award recipient at Vudibasoga Catholic School in Seaqaqa, Macuata. The moment was particularly poignant for Mr. Balawa as he celebrated not only Repeka’s academic success but also her receipt of a sponsorship letter from Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School, which will allow her to continue her education and sporting endeavors.
Repeka, who is the second eldest of four siblings, has recently made her mark in athletics, winning gold medals in both the Under-14 girls 800 meters and 1500 meters finals at last month’s Fiji Primary Schools Tucker Ice Cream Games held at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.
Reflecting on the challenges he faces as a single parent since his wife left four years ago, Mr. Balawa expressed immense pride in Repeka’s accomplishments, recalling that he himself was once named Year Eight dux at Bulavou District School back in 1989. Repeka excelled in her annual exams, achieving a score of 425 out of 500, and her ambition is to become a primary school teacher.
Living in the school hostel with her siblings, aged six, ten, and fifteen, Repeka shares a special bond with her father, stating, “Every Friday we go home to spend time with dad and then return to school on Monday.” She expressed deep appreciation for her father’s sacrifices, revealing that she often worries about his well-being while at school. Despite his struggles, Mr. Balawa wakes up at 4 AM every day to prepare breakfast and get the younger children ready for school.
With gratitude, Repeka dedicates her achievements to her father, praying for his long life, and she acknowledges the significant role her teachers and coach, Iosefo Apisai, have played in her sports success.
