Professor Shaista Shameem, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Fiji, emphasized the importance of transparency and respect in the process of amending the 2013 Constitution during her submission to an information session committee on Friday. She advised the government to avoid misleading tactics that could obscure the true reasons for constitutional amendments.

Instead, she called for a respectful dialogue with the ordinary citizens, urging that their dignity be upheld throughout the process. Professor Shameem highlighted the necessity of adhering to the revision protocols outlined in the 2013 Constitution, which mirror the procedures used in revising the 1970, 1990, and 1997 Constitutions.

This session marks the beginning of a broader discussion on constitutional amendments, which has seen participation from civil society organizations, religious groups, and constitutional experts. The informational meeting was chaired by Dr. Lesikimacuata Korovavala, the Permanent Secretary for the Office of the Prime Minister, indicating a structured approach to this significant constitutional endeavor.

In light of these developments, there’s a sense of hope that the engagement of various stakeholders will lead to a more inclusive and informed amendment process. Such dialogue could foster greater trust between the government and its citizens, breaking down barriers that often hinder effective governance.
