Forty-four new legal practitioners were recently welcomed into the Bar, marking a milestone moment for those who have spent years in dedicated study and personal sacrifice. Among these new lawyers is Niumaia Mara, who originates from Natokalau, Levuka, with maternal ties to Taveuni. Mara is particularly celebrated within his community as the first lawyer from his village, a testament to his commitment and perseverance.

Mara, the third of nine siblings, acknowledges the significant challenges he faced along his journey, particularly the influence of peer pressure due to his social nature. Despite these obstacles, Mara’s dedication has culminated in this proud achievement, supported by his family’s unwavering commitment. His father, Rolagi Bainikea, took on financial burdens to ensure his children’s education, reflecting the deep-rooted support that has been crucial to Mara’s success. Bainikea expressed gratitude for governmental assistance and emphasized the fulfillment of a parental dream seeing his child reach such significant milestones.

Now poised to start his career in criminal law litigation, Mara is volunteering with the Family Unit of the Legal Aid Commission. He aims to further his career either with Legal Aid or at the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, reflecting his dedication to contributing to the justice system.

This narrative of perseverance, familial support, and community pride echoes the stories of other newly admitted lawyers. For instance, similar journeys were shared by Pio Navara, who overcame financial hurdles with the aid of farming, and Ashna Dutt, whose faith and perseverance led to her success. These stories, brimming with challenges and eventual triumphs, highlight the profound impact of resilience combined with a supportive network.

Chief Justice Salesi Temo spoke of the qualities needed in the legal profession, such as discipline and integrity, underscoring the significant responsibilities these new legal practitioners will undertake. The collective experiences of these new lawyers serve as an inspiration, not only cementing personal achievements but also encouraging aspiring professionals across Fiji. These narratives showcase how determination and support can transform dreams into reality, offering hope and motivation for future generations.
