The Ministry of Local Government has announced that an increased funding allocation of $35 million in the 2025-2026 National Budget will bolster the development of new towns and support other initiatives through municipal grants. Minister Maciu Nalumisa highlighted that this funding is aimed at municipal councils, facilitating their various initiatives and development projects, particularly in essential services like garbage collection.
Minister Nalumisa emphasizes the importance of this financial support in empowering local authorities, which will improve infrastructure, enhance community services, and promote sustainable growth. The breakdown of the budget reveals that approximately $10.6 million will be directed to the National Fire Authority, $7 million will support master planning and new town developments in Nabouwalu and Keiyasi, and $3.2 million will be allocated for a waste collection subsidy for municipal councils. Additionally, $2.5 million is earmarked for the remediation of dumpsites in the Western Division, particularly in Sigatoka, Rakiraki, and Ba.
This funding initiative reflects a continuing commitment to supporting local governance and advancing community welfare. It positions the government favorably to respond to the needs of residents while fostering an environment that encourages local engagement in infrastructure development. As seen in prior similar initiatives, such as the government’s Village Improvement Scheme and various infrastructure upgrades, these projects are anticipated to enhance local community conditions significantly.
The comprehensive financial support not only aims to address immediate needs but also lays a strong foundation for longer-term development, signaling a hopeful path for community empowerment and improved quality of life for residents. This strategic investment is designed to inspire positive growth and cultivate a vibrant environment for all municipal stakeholders.
