Five correction officers have recently tested positive for illicit substances in a random drug testing initiative conducted by the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS). Commissioner of Corrections, Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa, reaffirmed the organization’s strict zero-tolerance policy regarding drug use among correction officers, leading to the immediate dismissal of the officers involved.

Dr. Nakarawa emphasized the significance of discipline and professionalism in maintaining safety and security within the correctional facilities. “This decisive action underscores our firm stance against any breach of conduct that compromises the safety and security of our institutions,” he stated.

To combat the infiltration of drugs and contraband, the FCS has implemented a range of rigorous measures, such as random searches and drug testing of officers. Dr. Nakarawa noted that regular and unannounced security checks would continue to ensure adherence to internal regulations.

The FCS is committed to fostering a safe, drug-free environment for both staff and inmates, encouraging all personnel to uphold the highest standards of conduct. This steadfast commitment aims to reinforce public confidence in the institution and enhance overall integrity, discipline, and security within all correctional facilities nationwide.

In light of recent events, it is hopeful that these initiatives will bolster efforts to maintain a secure environment, ensuring that both officers and inmates are kept safe from the risks associated with drug use.
