Avikash Pillay, the president of the Savusavu Chamber of Commerce and Industries, is calling on the Ministry of Health to address the inoperative X-ray machine at the Savusavu sub-divisional hospital. The machine has been out of service for over two months, with reports indicating it was only partially functional since July last year.
Pillay emphasized the readiness of the local business community to assist with repairs but stressed that they require direction from the ministry. Patients, like Ilisapeci Bola, have faced difficulties accessing necessary X-ray services, often having to go to alternative facilities like Zens Medical Centre. Bola noted that Savusavu Hospital is crucial for residents of Cakaudrove, including those from the Prime Minister’s village.
Local businessman Aren Nunnink investigated the situation and found that the X-ray machine merely needs a software upgrade. He highlighted the urgency for the machine to be functional, especially in emergency situations, and offered to fund the repairs using a local engineer who could fix it within 30 minutes. Despite his efforts to reach out to the proper authorities, he found that many were unavailable due to annual leave.
An email seeking an update from Dr. Jemesa Tudravu, the Permanent Secretary for Health and Medical Services, has gone unanswered. In light of this, Finance Minister Biman Prasad allocated $12 million in the 2024-2025 National Budget for upgrading various health facilities, including Savusavu’s health center, yet the X-ray machine issue remains unresolved.
While it is concerning that vital medical equipment is not functioning when it is so necessary, the engagement of the local business community in seeking solutions is a hopeful sign. Their willingness to support and address healthcare challenges highlights the strong community spirit in Savusavu. With continued pressure on the Ministry of Health and cooperative efforts from local leaders, there is potential for a quick resolution, ensuring the community has access to essential medical services in the near future.
