Rabuka Weighs Future Leadership as 2026 Election Approaches

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed his willingness to lead the People’s Alliance Party (PAP) in the upcoming 2026 General Election, contingent upon the party’s support. “I will be available,” he stated, emphasizing that the decision rests with the party’s leadership if they wish for him to continue in the role.

Rabuka was instrumental in the founding of the PAP in 2021 and played a significant role in shaping the party’s identity, contributing to its narrow victory in the December 2022 general elections. He reflected on his commitment to the party, stating, “I have done everything for the party for these past three years. But I will not desert the party.”

He acknowledged that if the party believes someone else could better fulfill the leadership role, he is prepared to step aside. However, Rabuka indicated that finding a suitable replacement could be challenging due to the current voter dynamics and the existing support base. He noted that public perception is shifting, with a previously eager sentiment turning towards a sense of uncertainty within the coalition.

Despite these challenges, Rabuka’s previous electoral success is noteworthy, as he garnered the highest number of votes for the PAP in the last election, with 77,748 votes. In comparison, other prominent party members, such as Lynda Tabuya, received significantly fewer votes.

As Fiji prepares for the electoral process, Rabuka’s readiness to adapt and step back if necessary showcases his dedication to serving the interests of the party and its constituents. The political environment can be unpredictable, but with strong leadership and a clear vision for the future, there remains hope for a reinvigorated PAP in the next election cycle.

This situation presents an opportunity for both the party and its voters to engage in discussions about leadership and direction, fostering a sense of unity and purpose as they approach the important decisions ahead.
