A 26-year-old waitress has been charged with a serious violation under Section 59 of the Juveniles Act 1973 after reportedly giving alcohol to her nearly two-year-old nephew at a drinking party in a village in Tailevu. It has been alleged that she offered the child a glass of beer, and a photograph depicting the toddler holding the drink circulated on social media, which prompted the involvement of authorities.

The waitress was taken into custody on January 25, 2025, during a police interview and has since been released. She is set to appear in the Nausori Magistrates Court later today. This unfortunate incident has drawn significant concern from community leaders and child protection advocates, who stress the importance of protecting children from the dangers of alcohol exposure.

Sashi Kiran, the Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, expressed her deep concern about the infringement on children’s rights and underscored the necessity for adults to take on the protective role for minors. She emphasized the need for individuals within the community to report alarming behaviors instead of sharing them on social media, highlighting a collective responsibility to ensure children’s safety.

This situation sheds light on the hazardous implications of alcohol consumption among minors and serves as a vital opportunity to educate communities on the responsibilities associated with parenting and caregiving. By fostering discussions about the dangers of alcohol use, the hope is to build a culture characterized by responsible adult behavior, ensuring that children can grow and thrive in safe environments.

As the community reflects on this incident, it serves as a stark reminder of the crucial role adults play in safeguarding and nurturing children. By prioritizing education around these issues, there is potential to create a nurturing and secure atmosphere for future generations, promoting healthier choices and heightened awareness of the impacts of alcohol.
