The Vanua of Vuda has launched a decisive initiative against drug abuse by imposing a nine-month traditional tabu aimed at safeguarding the youth from the escalating threat of substance misuse. During a gathering held on Friday, na Momo na Tui Vuda addressed members of the village aged 45 and under, emphasizing the critical need for this tabu to ensure community safety.

Taukei Sawaieke, Iliesa Cebaivalu, articulated that the tabu extends beyond mere restrictions; its purpose is to steer the younger generation towards healthier choices and pave the way for a more promising future. Cebaivalu highlighted that this initiative is set to yield numerous benefits, such as improved health, strengthened family bonds, and transformative changes within the community.

Tui Vuda underscored the perilous impacts of drug use, cautioning that the consequences can be devastating, often striking youth before they realize the severity of the situation. This warning comes amid recent drug discoveries in the Western Division, with Cebaivalu asserting that the use of drugs will not be tolerated in the vanua.

“The Vanua Vuda has been implementing the tabu for many years now, and this particular one holds significant importance, especially with the increasing frequency of drugs arriving on our shores,” Cebaivalu stated.

The current tabu is set to conclude on October 13, aligning with the Vanua o Vuda’s celebration of 200 years since the introduction of Christianity in Vuda. This initiative not only aims to combat substance abuse but also seeks to foster a healthier, more united community spirit, ultimately nurturing a brighter future for its younger generations.
