The University of the South Pacific (USP) is in the process of appointing a new Vice Chancellor after the verbal resignation of the current Vice Chancellor, Professor Pal Ahluwalia. Education Minister Aseri Radrodro confirmed that Ahluwalia expressed his intention to step down during a council meeting last month in Rarotonga, Cook Islands, where discussions also tackled the ongoing strike at the university.
Radrodro, directed by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, is actively involved in resolving the strike issues that have been affecting the institution. During the council meeting, Ahluwalia’s resignation was documented in the minutes, with proposals for a formal written resignation to finalize the transition.
As the council prepares for its next meeting, the focus will be on discussing the appointment of a new Vice Chancellor. This leadership change comes at a pivotal moment for USP, which has been grappling with challenges related to governance and communication, prompting alumni to raise concerns about the transparency of key decisions.
In a related development, Siosiua Tuitalukua Tupou Utoikamanu has been appointed as the new Pro-Chancellor and chair of the council, starting November 27, 2024. This change in leadership is expected to usher in a renewed commitment to improving the university’s operational efficiency and enhancing communication with stakeholders, especially in light of the pressing demand for transparency amid ongoing union strike activities.
This situation presents a valuable chance for USP to bolster its governance practices and strengthen its connections with the community. By focusing on open communication and timely updates, the university can work towards rebuilding trust and furthering its mission to deliver quality education throughout the Pacific Islands.
