The University of the South Pacific (USP) has responded to concerns raised by students regarding accommodation challenges at its Laucala Campus, particularly at the commencement of the academic year. The university recognizes the stress that housing issues can create for students.
In a recent statement, USP noted that the demand for on-campus accommodation significantly surpasses the available capacity. For the upcoming Semester 1 of 2026, the university received over 2,000 applications for just 1,073 beds, highlighting the intensity of the accommodation challenge.
To manage room allocations fairly, USP utilizes a priority system. First-year students from various regions are given top priority, followed by first-year students from areas outside Viti Levu, and finally those from beyond the greater Suva region. Returning students are also considered for housing, but only after the needs of new students have been addressed, depending on the availability of spaces.
USP emphasized the importance of adhering to application deadlines, stating that those who submit their applications on time are prioritized. However, the university also pointed out that late applications and students arriving without prior accommodation approval have added to the strain on available housing.
In response to the situation, teams from USP are actively engaging with affected students to explore options for providing guidance and support. The university is committed to addressing these issues with care, empathy, and a sense of fairness, ensuring that students feel supported during this transition period.
Overall, USP’s proactive approach demonstrates its dedication to fostering a supportive environment for all its students, even amidst challenging circumstances.
