The Fiji Muslim Women’s League Navua Branch, situated in the oldest mosque in the country, was reportedly the target of a burglary over the weekend. This incident appears to be unprecedented in the mosque’s extensive history. The members of the Navua Women’s League discovered the break-in on Tuesday following a search of the premises, leading them to find that the door of a bulk storage room was forcibly opened.

It has been estimated that various items stored inside were stolen, valued at around $6,500. The robbery has left the members of the mosque feeling shocked and dismayed. Local authorities have been notified, with the Navua Police Station receiving reports of the incident and initiating an investigation. The mosque community is appealing to the public for any information that could assist in this concerning matter.

This break-in resonates with recent trends of sacrilege at places of worship in Fiji, where similar incidents have led to increased alarm within the community. For instance, other religious spaces, like the Dugapatu Mariamman Temple in Rakiraki and the Masjid Muhammadi in Nadi, have also faced violations that threaten community harmony and safety.

As the investigation continues, there is hope that the community can come together in vigilance and support for their shared places of worship, reinforcing their role as sanctuaries of peace and understanding amidst such troubling events. These acts create an opportunity for communities to unite in promoting respect and safety for all faiths, advocating for stronger protections of communal spaces moving forward.
