At the Fiji Finals, taking place tomorrow at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva, Suva Grammar School’s athletics coach, Jone Delai, characterized his team as the underdogs in the boys’ division. Delai, a former national sprinter, noted the fierce competition posed by powerhouse schools like Marist Brothers High School and Natabua High School, which are currently preferred to win the championship due to their prior successes in zone events.
Delai explained, “First of all, they are the favourites right now because they are zone winners. Like us and a few other schools, we are underdogs.” Despite this acknowledgment, he expressed confidence in his athletes, stressing their readiness to perform at their best on competition day. “I know the athletes, they know what they are capable of,” Delai said, exhibiting a sense of belief in their training and dedication.
Marist Brothers High School’s athletics coach, Antonio Raboiliku, echoed sentiments of respect for Suva Grammar, referring to them as “natural champions.” However, Delai emphasized that tracking the strengths and results of rival teams underscores the challenges they face. He mentioned the importance of execution on the day of competition, remarking, “Whoever executes the best is going to win, and may the best team win.”
Suva Grammar’s journey towards the Fiji Finals was marked by a commendable performance at the Suva Zone Two Athletics competition, where they finished second in the boys’ division and showed resilience throughout their interhouse meet leading up to the finals. This determination to achieve glory in athletics reflects the broader trend within Fiji’s athletic community, as schools increasingly promote youth participation and harness local talent.
The excitement surrounding the Fiji Finals serves to unite schools and inspire young athletes, illuminating a hopeful future for athletics in Fiji. Given the competitive spirit and communal support fostered during events like these, there lies optimism that all athletes will perform to their fullest potential.
